Based in Boonville, New York, with locations across the northeast in Little Valley, New York, Allenwood, Pennsylvania, and Fremont, New Hampshire, the family-owned company stays on the cutting edge of forestry technology, always adapting to the latest advancements. CJ Logging and Sawmill Supplies was started in August of 1981 out of a small garage on the East Road in Boonville, NY. A joint effort between Mark Bourgeois, his wife Linda, and Gary Bourgeois, along with their mother, Janet, the business began as a chainsaw dealer with Husqvarna, Partner, and Homelite. The name “CJ Logging” was the idea of Linda Bourgeois, who suggested the company be named for Mark and Gary’s paternal grandfather, Carl James Bourgeois. Carl, known as “CJ,” owned and operated a business in the same garage where CJ Logging began, selling snowmobiles, boats, motorcycles, and firearms. CJ Bourgeois was responsible for selling the first mass-produced Polaris snowmobile in the northeastern United States.
In 1983, the Bourgeois family was approached by William Buckingham, owner of Loggers Equipment Sales, Inc., of Glens Falls, NY, which specialized in the sale of logging equipment. Buckingham asked the family to sell logging equipment with his company, an offer which they accepted. Tree Farm Skidders and Husky Brute knuckleboom log loaders were among the first equipment that CJ’s began selling, and soon after, the Hood line of knuckleboom loaders and slashers were added.
On August 1st, 1984, the business incorporated and changed its name to “CJ Logging Equipment, Inc.” The business moved its large equipment repair operation in 1986 to a new lot in Boonville’s Industrial Park, which housed no other tenants at the time. A 30-by-50-foot steel building was built, which was necessary to house the growing needs of the business.
3B Timber Company, Inc. was created in 1987 by the Bourgeois’, which specialized in pole peeling, and was housed adjacent to CJ Logging Equipment in Boonville’s Industrial Park. Gary Bourgeois devoted most of his time to this company. Today, 3B Timber Company specializes in purchasing red pine poles, softwood and hardwood, and manufacturing utility poles, mulch, pulp wood, and firewood. The 1990’s were a period of great advancement at CJ Logging Equipment. In 1993, Mark recognized that the forestry industry was going mechanized. He made a trip to Wisconsin to meet Pat Crawford, owner of the logging equipment manufacturer Timbco. Crawford awarded CJ Logging Equipment the franchise for Timbco. CJ Logging’s relation with Loggers Equipment Sales, Inc. also made them a sub-dealer for Western Star Trucks.
1993 brought a new office building and showroom to the Industrial Park, where the sales department and offices were moved in 1994 from its original location on the front porch of Mark and Linda’s home. The office was, and remains, occupied by CJ Logging Equipment and 3B Timber Company. By 1994, all of the company’s operations had been moved to the Industrial Park.
Expanding again, in 1995 a 4,200 square foot state-of-the-art addition was added to the existing office building housing a new shop, office space, and break room. By the mid 90’s, CJ Logging Equipment had expanded to provide service in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, as well as New York.
On a Western Star Trucks factory visit in 1996, Mark met a fellow logging equipment dealer who represented Tigercat. The dealer told Mark about the manufacturer and their equipment. Later that year, Tigercat announced they were manufacturing skidders, so Mark contacted them and was awarded a franchise.
In 1997, the Bourgeois snowmobile business returned to Boonville. An arrangement was created for another company, CJ Motor Sports. This company added Ski-Doo snowmobiles, ATV’s, and other small equipment to CJ’s offerings. Today, CJ Motor Sports franchises include Can-Am, Ski-Doo, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Lynx, and more.
In 1998, internationally acclaimed chainsaw safety course, Game of Logging, made its way to Boonville and was held at CJ Logging Equipment April 17th and 18th. After a successful first run, the games retuned again that same year from September 18th, 19th, and 20th.
CJ Logging Equipment has been an integral part of the NYS Woodsmen’s Field Days since the company began, and they still participate today. Over the years they have been known for showcasing their lines of logging equipment, Husqvarna products, and selling their popular t-shirts. CJ’s booth has been home to special attractions as well. In 1999, NASCAR #18, a car driven by Bobby LaBonte, joined their booth at the 52nd Woodsmen’s. In 2010, 2015, and 2017, Bobby Goodson and his wife, Lori, from the hit television series “Swamp Loggers” signed autographs and visited with fans at the CJ Logging Equipment booth. The Goodson’s also appeared in the annual parade aboard a Tigercat machine with CJ Logging.
CJ Logging Equipment is also a long-time supporter and donor to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through the Log-A-Load for Kids fundraising campaign, which donates to local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
2012 brought a year of change to the company. CJ Motor Sports moved from its previous location to a newly refurbished facility adjacent to the CJ Logging Equipment operation in the Industrial Park, a building which originally housed the former N.M. Sargent & Sons wood plant. CJ Motor Sports operates in this location today. That year also brought the major expansion of CJ Logging, this time to new locations. In October 2012, CJ Logging Equipment bought the remaining assets of Lyons Equipment, which included their locations in Little Valley, NY and Allenwood, PA. CJ’s still operates in these locations today.
In 2015, Mark Bourgeois bought out his brother, Gary’s, interest in the company, becoming the sole owner. CJ Logging Equipment remains a family business, and it isn’t unusual to meet a member of the Bourgeois family when visiting! A fourth location was later opened, this time in Bruceton Mills, WV, which later closed. For a time, CJ’s also had a location in Wheelock, VT. In 2020, they expanded once again, to Fremont, NH. This addition made it easier for the company to serve the greater New England areas.
